Follow us on Twitter: Here’s Why

Financial Planning Association of New Jersey is uniquely positioned to garner the attention of national as well as local media, given its geography. With every journalist and the publications they write for on Twitter, it was a natural step to join the social media platform, which is celebrating its 10th birthday this week.

Launched as a ‘soft open’ last week, @FPANJ1 (our Twitter handle) will reach out to follow local and national media, publications, relevant advisors who are active in blogging, allied professionals like NJSCPA. We will share the latest news releases from the chapter, and share others’ posts.

What’s the benefit?

  • Additional opportunity to interact with media where they are active, real-time
  • Promotion of chapter events like Spring and Fall Conferences, meetings
  • Publicity for advocacy events like Trenton and Washington Advocacy Days
  • Member promotion – sharing of member events, accomplishments
  • Public and pro bono awareness (sharing with partners like William Paterson, JA, Rutgers, etc.)

How does it work?

Twitter streams allow for posts as often as we wish. The same cannot be said for Facebook and especially not LinkedIn. The only exception is if we were to post every minute all day long. Otherwise, the expectation is that as people follow dozens of feeds, we want to be seen, and will post 5-10 times each day.

FPANJ will follow pages, and often it’s the quickest way to be noticed – and followed back. The more followers we have the more our messages are seen.

We will also make sure to share (retweet) posts of those we’d like to have follow us, as they are notified when this happens. The same goes for liking tweets.

When we have an upcoming event like Spring Conference, the strategy of using hashtags is used. We’ve named Spring Conference #FPANJSpr16. ANY instance where we are talking about it, we use the hashtag, and we also encourage other users to do the same. When enough people begin to repeat the hashtag it sends alerts to other followers of our page and those using the hashtag’s followers. Used enough, it becomes a trending topic.

The day of the conference, if anyone attending is on Twitter, it’s great to tweet about what the speakers are saying, what your impressions of the day are (and hopefully it’s all positive), all using the hashtag in your tweets. The hashtag can also be searched to list all of the tweets posted, and it’s a tool often used by journalists to capture reaction and commentary about a topic. Photos are excellent, too!

Hashtags are also useful in picking up on an already-trending topic. For example, we posted about an article which used the NCAA brackets as an analogy. Using #BracketBusted and #NCAA puts our tweet in the stream of others also tweeting about this using the same hashtag.

How can you help?

  • If you’re on Twitter, please follow us, of course @FPANJ1, and retweet/like as often as you can
  • If you mention us in a tweet make sure we know about it by using our @FPANJ1 handle in the tweet
  • Got a blog that you write, an event to share, an accomplishment? Share that with us. Even if you aren’t on Twitter, please send the info (with any links) to
  • Any relationships with your local media or interviews you’ve done are great too! Reporters are always on Twitter and it’s great to mention them to let them know we’ve been reading their stuff

At the end of the day, it’s important to know that this social media platform has gone far beyond what celebrities have had for breakfast. We’re excited to add this tool to our communications arsenal and hope you’ll help us succeed and grow our brand.
