It was a perfect evening as FPANJ members gathered at TopGolf in Edison for a networking and appreciation event.

After sharing appetizers and a few drinks, attendees heard a few words from the event sponsors — Baird Equity Asset Management, Chartwell Investment Partners, Equinox Funds, FlexShares and TD Ameritrade Institutional, followed by a talk by Karin Price Mueller, the Bamboozled columnist for The Star-Ledger, founder of NJMoneyHelp.com and longtime friend of FPANJ.

Mueller tackled a topic that's a challenge for many advisors in this political era: how to handle your clients' concerns about the stock market and investing while President Trump is in office. Mueller said that while the stock market typically hates uncertainty, we're still seeing prices move higher. That's despite unknowns about tax reform, what will happen with the Russia investigation and threats of nuclear war with North Korea. And if nuclear war isn't making the market nervous, what will? Is this the new irrational exuberance?

Mueller covered ideas about how to handle your own political views while helping clients who say they're concerned. She suggested we remind clients that the stock market won't go up in a straight line forever, so even if we're staying fully invested, investors should get ready for the inevitable correction.

Following the talk, FPANJ President Diane DeOliveira led a group conversation about what attendees had experienced with their own clients, and what strategies they've used with clients.

After that, it was time to hit some golf balls!
