Public Awareness

Recognizing American’s need to plan their financial futures better than ever before the Financial Planning Association of New Jersey (FPANJ) hosted a statewide week of events in October to educate people that financial planning is a lifelong practice. “It is critical that, as an industry, we reach out to as many people as possible to help them understand the benefits of saving, investment, and spending plans, “ said James E. Kearney, CFP®, CTFA, chairman of the Financial Planning Association of New Jersey.  Events were scheduled from October 4th – 18th, with presentations on basic money management, real estate planning, money management and budgeting, credit issues, retirement planning, wills and other legal instruments.

Saturday (10/4/08)

  • Dover Health Fair (Dover, Morris County)
    • Saturday, October 4. (11:00 am – 2:00 pm) FPANJ volunteers will speak on Financial Planning Basics, Budgeting & Credit and will be on hand to answer individual questions from attendees.  A full exhibit table with educational financial literature for attendees will be available.

 Monday (10/6/08)

  • Capitol Day (Trenton)
    • Monday, October 6. NJ State Capitol, Trenton. (10:00am - 2:00 pm) This event will provide legislators, staff members, and the public an opportunity to talk with a Financial Planning Association member and learn more about the value of financial planning and discuss financial planning issues.

Monday (10/6/08)

  • Bridge the Gap (Florham Park, the Mansion)
    • Bridge the Gap - October 6 - FDU, Florham Park, the Mansion.  (6:00 - 9:00 pm) This program is designed to meet the needs of financial planning students in CFP registered education programs and for new planners just starting their career in financial planning.

Tuesday (10/7/08)

  • Financial Health Day (Bergen Community College-Student Center)
    • 9:30-12:30 pm – Two sets of workshops will be given for new students on the “basics of financial planning, money management & credit.”  The perils of identity theft and how to prevent it will also be covered.  Dr. Ryan, President of BCC has highlighted the importance of financial planning by proclaiming October 6-12, 2008 as Financial Planning Week at Bergen Community College.  FPANJ is encouraging discussion by issuing its E$$AY Challenge.  The winning student essay on personal finance will be awarded $500.

Tuesday (10/7/08)

  • Joint Conference with NJSCPA  (Their facility in Roseland)
    • Surviving the Mortgage Crisis: October 7th. (6:30-8:30pm) Joint conference with NJSCPA, Roseland.   A CFP®, CPA and mortgage professional will be on hand to answer your financial/mortgage questions.
    • Reservations are required as space is limited.  Call 972-226-4494 x246.  A light supper will be served.

    • FPANJ Volunteers will take over a total of six classes in the 3rd, 4th & 5th grades.
    • Our volunteers will teach the students the financial planning process, their role in the economy and the importance of education to their success in life.

Saturday (10/11/08)

  • Special Needs Planning Conference (Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside)
    • 1:00 – 4:30 pm – Renowned planners and authors in this field, Nadworny & Haddad, will join representatives from government and the non-profit sector and attorneys to frame the important issues in life planning in this specialized field and answer audience questions.

Saturday (10/18/08)

  • Financial Literacy Volunteers  (Mercer County, Hamilton)

    • 10:00am - 12:00pm - Financial Education for the tutors of LV as part of their professional development.  LV contact: June Vogel, Dir.
    • FPANJ volunteers will do a presentation on the basics of financial planning & budgeting, understanding credit and the importance of good credit for a successful plan & preventing ID theft.

Department of Banking & Insurance of NJ (DOBI)
Financial Literacy Month: Our volunteers will participate in Financial Literacy Month at high schools throughout New Jersey during the entire month of October.  They will help young adults become more aware of how to take control of their financial futures by presenting a program focusing on budgeting, saving, investment and the value of good credit.
